It seemed that everywhere in Farmington had no concept of time. Almost every spot was a 24/7 kind of place. It wasn’t that it was a bad thing, just seemed very unlikely in the eyes of a Ms. Charlie Olera. Then again, if it wasn’t for the employees willing to be hoaxed into staying late by slave-driver managers, Charlie might not have been on her 5 hole in the rainbow lighten, neon black-light golf course. Incase you don’t know what that entails, think cosmic bowling but with large light-weight metal sticks flying all over the insides of a building.

A soft smile spread across her lips as she apologized to a group of preteens who had, without trying, caught her putter between one of their legs. At least it had been a girl, right? With an embarrassed chuckle escaping her glossy lips, she hustled towards the group, apologized once more, and grabbed her putter. Preteens can be scary sometimes; especially when it’s a group and they have your only means of protecting yourself.

Nearly tripping on ripped jeans, Charlie finally managed to get to hole 7, skipping hole 6 due to the prior encounter. “I’m going to be eaten by the younger generation one of these days, I can tell.” She tried to contain her wild grin, turning her concentration back to the whole in front of her and swinging violently. Miss? Sink? Hole in 1?
After hearing a soft splash, she could only assume that was a miss. Why would they have a pond in an indoor black-light golf course? That just seems like you’re asking for trouble.

She groaned and pulled another golf ball out of her denim pocket, “Come on lucky number 2?” She muttered to herself, fixing the dark trucker hat that sat like a rock on her messy hair. Swing! Thud?
Her eyes brightened upon the realization that she’d hit the large windmill that stood at the end of the hole. Grimacing, she skipped to the next hole, hoping no one had the misfortune of being hit due to her horrible aim.

“Why do I even come to these places?” She hissed through pursed lips, her rear hitting the soft Astroturf in time for a heavy sigh to escape. As much as she complained, she couldn’t help but feel happy for finally getting out of that stuffy house full of way too many children than any one family should have. She bit down on pale lips, her eyes bouncing from the lights to the outlined course structures. She knew from that start that this was how she planned to spend her Wednesday night/ Thursday morning, and had purposely worn a white shirt with bright neon stars spread across her chest along with bright beaded bracelets to catch the attention of the lights. Nothing beat black lights. At least that’s what she thought.

“Sorry, kids! That was the last go around for tonight!”

Those were the words the middle-aged and sun burnt Azo Island employee hollered as the whirring of go-kart engines dulled to a silence. Causing a group of recent high school graduates to complain amongst themselves, some more loudly and less polite than others. They weren’t exactly the ideal company for Brandon Colvin; however, his best friend had been M.I.A. lately and he did spend four years on the track teams with these guys so when he got the random phone call yesterday about a meet up at the amusement center he figured why not. It was up until this point, where the guys got ridiculously rude and the employee got understandably furious, that he was actually having a good time out with the guys.

Hey Brendon, we’re gonna head down to Dreamz and toss back a few drinks, you in man?” One of his old teammates, Scott had called over once the young men had regrouped at the park gates. “Naw man, I got some financial aid interviews in the morning but I’ll catch you guys later, definitely call me!” Was the response he gave with a smile and a wave meanwhile the party he’d previously been with wandered off without a second thought to the lone boy’s whereabouts. It was fun while it lasted, but in all honesty, the last place he wanted to go with the jocks he’d hung out with in high school was a strip club; mostly he didn’t want to have to get drunk with these guys followed by his not wanting to look at naked women, drunk, with these guys. It just didn’t equal out to a fantastic evening in his mind.

So what to do, what to do? While dusting go-kart dirt from his loose fitting blue jeans and a tight fitting old dare shirt he’d bought at goodwill the boy thought. His family were all up to their own business, his best friend was, as previously stated, basically vacant and he had a chunk of open house money burning a hole in his pocket – so, it was reasonable that the toothpick boy could play himself a round of mini golf. Making his way towards the window he was about to request a regular round of normal, outside, plain-jane mini golf, until something caught his attention. “I’d like to try the, uhm… cosmic mini golf?” He paid and received a golf putter, neon balls, score card and pencil, surviving the patronizing tone of the girl asking if he was playing alone and slipped inside the building. Blinking a bit, he knew he would need a moment to adjust to the hues of the black lights so he stood quietly and observed, smirking as he noticed the logo of his shirt glow yet not stopping to think of how the orange bands on his braces would be having the same effect.

After a few minutes of plain old spacing out, Charlie decided to give it another go, figuring that maybe the next hole wouldn’t be so hard, after all, it was near the doors and the construction workers would make anything near incoming paying customers safe right? Unable to be turned into a human decapitator, right?”

She took a deep gulp before turning her hat backwards, trying to look serious as she lifted up her putter and scanned the surroundings. Didn’t look like there were that many people and she had ditched those scary preteens a few holes back. Good. A smile once again came to her face as she dug her bright red slip on shoes into the depths of the Astroturf. And with a quick motion, she saw the ball fly and-

“Where’d it go,” She whispered to herself rather than anyone in general. Nervous eyes searched for anyone who looked somewhat in pain, and the whole situation had her chewing on already non-existing finger nails. “No takers?” She meekly said above a whisper.
With no answer, she took that as a cue to hurry over to the next hole. Maybe she’d have better luck there.
Probably not, but she wasn’t about to stick around to hear someone scream in agony. It wasn’t her fault that she didn’t now how to gulf. You’d think with all the men in her family, one of them would have taken her out to learn or at least practice the stupid gulf course with her. Instead she was probably going to be labeled the ‘Mini Gulf Murder’ by the end of the night.

Hazel eyes went from squinting towards the first hole to wide with shock at the incoming neon missile of doom that had whacked him in the shin. A slight squeak had come from his lips after being hit, "I surrender!" He called as his face glowed a soft red that would be unnoticeable in the skewed lighting of the golf course. Brandon's eyes again squinting, only now for the culprit of the mini golf hit and run, the bright green ball in his hands. Since the hour was late and there weren't many people around he was pretty certain he could narrow his assailant down.

Now there was a grumpy looking group of younger looking kids across the way and a solitary female who seemed to be awfully hurried in her conquest of the next hole, so using his basic reasoning skills he followed the girl. "Excuse me, miss? I think you owe my shin an apology!" He called after her, feeling if not a little more adventerous than usual.

Charlie had just stepped foot on the 9th hole when her ears perked up at the sound of an incoming strange. “What was that?” She squeaked out, already feeling her cheeks burn bright red from embarrassment. Turning on a heel, she obtained a better look of the taller boy and grimaced. “I’m really sorry about that. They should have never given me a put,” the words quickly poured out, but surprisingly she was smiling wide. Thankfully the boy didn’t look big or scary, because she couldn’t help but laugh. Oddly, something about the whole situation was amusing to her.

“Can I make it up to you? I’d offer by buying you a round of put-put, but it looks like I’m a little late for that,” Eyes were scanning him up and down. “I only have 5 dollars on me, but you can have that if you really want.” What was this? She was offering money up for compensation? “Or I could offer to clean those darling bright braces you have,” she offered while the smile still twisted her lips.

“I’m Charlie,” She stated, not sure if he even cared, but it was so rare that she met new people she wasn’t going to let the chance pass by. “And you would be?” She paused before adding with a serious look on her face. “Hey, I need to know who I have to write that IOU to.”

"No, no, it's really okay I don't really expect anything, I uhm, just thought you should apologize to my shin?" Brandon started that sentence sure he knew what he wanted to say, sadly by the end he was feeling pretty silly about following the poor girl around the mini golf course to demand an apology for his off-chance shin injury. Sadly though, he could have said the sky was purple and still not blushed bright red like he had when his braces had been mentioned, not even having registered the thought that the bands on his teeth must be glowing like little individual 'hey look at the nearly grown man with braces' signs.

"Oh, uhm I'm Brandon, its nice to meet you Charlie." As he spoke his hand had risen instinctively to cover his mouth, he then shook his head quickly, "No really, really its okay. I don't expect an IOU or anything really." He tried insisting, clutching his club in his free hand and balancing the golf balls and pencil in the other, letting it fall from in front of his face as he stopped talking.

Charlie just watched him. He seemed like a bit of a scatter brain. It was really all quite amusing. “Hey, don’t cover them up!” She screeched, slapping at his hand even though he was bringing it down to his side. “I wish my mouth was that brilliant. I mean, pearly whites just look awkward in here. Not that I have pearly whites but…” She probably looked just as awkward to him as he did to her.

“And I’m happy I hit your shins and not some nasty money hungry fiend. I need those five dollars to buy something to eat.” Her smile grew wide as she reached to touch his hair without thinking it through. “You’re hair has got to be one of the prettiest things I’ve seen in awhile. Seriously, some boys around here just slap their hair together in the morning, without even bothering to comb it.” With a roll of the eyes, she once again found placed her rear on the ground.

“I have to say it’s real nice to see someone my age hanging around here so late, or early in the day.” Her eyes wandered back to the preteens who were catching up to the hole they were currently occupying. “I know you probably just got here, but would you like to accompany me to the next hole? I’m afraid those nasty children are going to try to jump me.”

Brandon bit on his lower lip for a moment but eventually a small smile returned to his face, nothing on Earth could make the boy enjoy having braces, but it was usually a relief when somebody had something nice to say about them. "Oh please, you're just saying that." He responded with a shrug and a chuckle. Backing away only slightly from the girl's hand after she'd touched his hair, his eyes slightly widened, as subconsciously he ran his own fingertips through after hers had left. "Uhm, thanks, yea I brush it, like a few times a day." He replied, faintly colored in the cheeks.

"I bet you could take them, to be honest." Brandon commented after turning his gaze to look them over. "Buut, since you asked I would love to join you, because, well, it beats playing through by myself, right?" He commented with a smile, looking down at the yellow and pink golf balls the girl at the counter had handed him.

Her eyebrows wrinkled and she let out a soft laugh. “I’m sure you do,” she said with an another laugh. “And I wasn’t just saying that. As odd as it seems, I was really upset in middle school because my mother wouldn’t let me get braces. Not that you care for my life story, but just be happy with what you have. When do they come off?” She seemed like a nosey neighbor. “You going to have a party that day, or what?”

She stood up and grabbed her putter, “I don’t know about that. They look kind of tough. Plus I’d be outnumbered.” She made a mocking scared face before trotting on ahead. “And I’m glad you said that, it really is boring being here by oneself. Trust me.”

"I have no idea when they're coming off, every time I see the orthodontist he's all 'Brendon my boy, the teeth aren't shifting as quickly as we hoped so I'll let you know in six weeks.' I mean, he doesn't even know my name, but my mom still makes me see him, it's insane!" Brandon laughed a little, loosening up a bit before he let a small frown capture his features, "I'm sorry you couldn't get braces, and I'd gladly give you mine if I could. Then yes, I would throw a party."

Brandon pursed his lips for a moment and nodded, "That is true, those kids do look pretty fierce and there are a lot of them, hey what did you do to them anyways?" Brandon asked before looking towards the putting green of the hole they were near, he set his ball down and held his putter still, awaiting her to go first, a gentlemen he was.

“Brendon? That’s pretty dumb. But maybe he’s reliable in his own way?” Charlie frowned, “And if you have a party I believe its customary that you must eat anything and everything that you weren’t allowed to or able to do to the metal trap in your mouth.” She grinned wide, shifting her weight to one side of her body once they’d finally reached the next hole.

She took her hat off and ran her fingers quickly through her messy hair. “I hit one of them with my putter,” she muttered, teeth chewing on her bottom lip. “It was a complete accident, and I doubt it’ll happen again,” her voice was timid, afraid that she’d scare her new acquaintance away. “I mean I guess if I were you, I’d stand a few feet away,” She motioned to her left before picking up the metal stick, getting ready to swing at the neon green ball that lay in front of her. “Fore!” She screamed, eyes clenching tight after she felt the metal put hit the plastic ball. “Am I good?” A shaky voice questioned while she slowly opened one eye.

Smirking, Brandon nodded, "Yea, I've eaten most of what I was told not to but there are some foods I just can't because it sucks and they get stuck in my brackets, I cannot even tell you how much I miss popcorn, and carrot sticks..." He added after a moment's thought. "Now I'm even more anxious to get my braces removed." A soft laugh following as he licked at his lips before bitting softly on the lower.

It was instinct that made him take a step back after hearing her story, this girl must not be very skilled with her mini golf game, and while the shin injury was nothing, he didn't want to take any chances. He almost was afraid to watch after she'd yelled out for people to watch and then let loose on the ball but with one eye open he tracked the ball's course. "Uhh... yea, you're good. You over swung just a bit, but you're good." He said with a nod.

“Mmm, that sucks Mr. Brandon. Popcorn is delicious. And carrot sticks are about the only source of vegetables I eat so I think braces might have killed me.” She grinned wide and stepped aside. “I have a bad feeling that it’ll take me more than 10 tries to get it in the hole,” She frowned, but only for a moment. Even if her game was off- way off- it was nice to have someone else to play with. As long as he wasn’t zipping through the course.

“So, you aren’t still in school are you? Sorry if I’m asking so many questions tonight. I just, well, as sad as it sounds- I haven’t gotten to chill with another kid who seems around my age in a long long time.” She straightened out her shirt and bent to pick up her hat from where it lay on the ground after she had taken it off. “But if I ever get annoying just.. tell me to be quiet. God, I’d be annoyed if I were you, I’ll just..” Charlie pretended to zip her mouth close while looking from the boy to her feet which were itching to move around.

"Well I guess some kids don't have a problem with carrot sticks, but I popped at least four brackets off my teeth trying to eat them so I gave up, and I tried sneaking popcorn a few times but so many of the little pieces get stuck and its just gross." Brandon commented with a shrug, a slight smile coming to him as he dropped the pink ball down and smacked it with the putter, the shot wasn't great but it stayed in the area it was supposed to, quickly going straight and bumping a ledge coming about half the way back where he started, "Don't feel bad, I'll probably take at the very least five shots. Tiger Woods I am not."

Shaking his head, Brandon smiled and walked near his neon pink golf ball, "Nope, I graduated back in June, and its okay, I don't mind the questions at all. I hear you out on social contacts, ever since my best friend got a girl friend he's been harder than usual to get a hold of." He said trying to size up the distance between the ball and the hole, "How about you, you've graduated I'm guessing?"
